Neutering

Neutering is typically a straightforward day procedure performed under general anaesthetic. It involves the surgical removal of reproductive organs to prevent pets from reproducing. If breeding from your pet is not intended, neutering is the most responsible option.

For females, spaying involves the removal of both ovaries and the uterus. The benefits of spaying include:

- Elimination of heat cycles (no bleeding or unwanted attention from males).
- Prevention of unwanted pregnancies, reducing the strain on rescue charities struggling to rehome kittens and puppies.
- Reduced risk of certain cancers, including uterine and ovarian cancers, as well as a lower likelihood of mammary gland cancer.
- Prevention of pyometra (a life-threatening uterine infection).

For males, castration involves the removal of both testicles. The benefits of castration include:

- Prevention of testicular cancer.
- Reduced risk of prostate issues as the animal ages.
- Lowered aggression levels when hormone-driven.
- Prevention of undesirable behaviours, such as roaming, fighting with other males, or urine marking.
